U.S. Foodservice Helps Restaurants “Buy Local”Distributor creates new ordering feature to help operators find more than 10,000 local and regional products
Rosemont, Ill. - Apr 28, 2010
U.S. Foodservice, one of the nation’s largest food distributors, announced a new initiative that helps restaurants and other food establishments bring local and regional products to their customers.
U.S. Foodservice’s restaurant customers can now easily determine if a product is locally sourced through the company’s online ordering system. Local products will be identified by a special “local” icon and will include detailed product information, including the location of the grower or manufacturer and the distance from the supplier to the U.S. Foodservice distribution center.
“This is an industry leading approach that provides transparency about our product sourcing and promotes local options to our customers,” said Pat Mulhern, president Monarch Food Group, U.S. Foodservice. “U.S. Foodservice is committed to delivering on our promise to provide more local options to our customers so that together we can support communities and reduce the amount of carbon emissions associated with the transportation of food from farm to fork.”
U.S. Foodservice’s online ordering system will feature more than 10,000 products that are local to U.S. Foodservice divisions. The enhanced system will also allow U.S. Foodservice customers to conduct product searches that display only local items.
U.S. Foodservice’s dedication to offering locally sourced products is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to providing customers sustainable foods and supplies. Other examples of U.S. Foodservice sustainable products include certified sustainable wild-caught and farm-raised seafood, as well as the company’s exclusive line of Monogram Sustain® disposable products that are made with renewable resources such as corn, sugar cane and potato starch. The products are compostable, biodegradable and petroleum-free.
