LOCALMAN WINS NATIONAL SAFETY CHAMPIONSHIP
Steve Berwald takes first place in 48-foot tractor trailer category
SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 30, 2011
Steve Berwald of Watertown, Minn., was honored Saturday by
U.S. Foodservice during the company’s Fifth Annual National Safety Championship in San
Antonio. Berwald is one of approximately 9,000 U.S. Foodservice drivers and warehouse
selectors nationwide and has worked at the company’s distribution center in Plymouth for 22
years.
Berwald squared off against 16 other top U.S. Foodservice 48-foot tractor trailer drivers who
won regional competitions hosted by the company around America the last few months. At the
National Safety Championship, Berwald had to safely navigate a challenging driving course
while carrying simulated product loads. He also demonstrated his safety knowledge in a written
exam. The U.S. Foodservice event is widely recognized as one of the most challenging tractortrailer
driving competitions in America.
"This event raises awareness of driving safety and allows drivers to showcase their
extraordinary skills and talent," said Tim Beauchamp, chief supply chain officer, U.S.
Foodservice. "We are thrilled to recognize Steve for his expert driving and dedication to safety.
He is truly one of the best 48-foot tractor trailer drivers in America."
Berwald received a $2,000 award and was honored during a special banquet Saturday at the
Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio.
